Formative Assessments
Formative assessments are ongoing methods of evaluating instructional methods throughout the teaching and learning process. They address the questions, "How are we doing?".
These tools include:
Teacher observations
Daily quizzes
Diagnostic tests
Lab reports
Teachers can monitor and immediately revise instructional strategies by using these methods of evaluation. They allow teachers to validate those areas that appear to be working, and change those that are not as effective before the end of the unit or academic year.
In contrast,
summative
evaluations, such as state-required tests, are performed after the academic term to show instructional effectiveness, usually at a predetermined time.
