Summative Assessment
Summative assessment is commonly used in education to determine how well students have mastered concepts at the end of a course or program. This type of evaluation helps teachers identify the extent to which instructional goals and student learning outcomes have been met.
These types of evaluations can shape how educators design and revise their curricula and what type of courses schools offer. Teaching effectiveness may also be evaluated at the end of the year.
Although there are many types, the most common examples include:
End-of-unit tests
End-of-term exams
Accountability testing
State-mandated testing
These evaluations are usually norm-referenced tests that compare groups using
standard scores.
Educational administrators and law makers rely heavily on these tests to improve the level of education within and across states. These evaluations are also used to establish standards of proficiency that students much achieve in order to the next level of education or graduate.
